Two bowls of citrusy punch greeted us as we entered the auditorium The tables were attractively decorated with purple tablecloths, cream, napkins and small white vases of flowers which set a quiet serene mood to the room. Anne Canney welcomed everyone prior to Rev Swan giving the blessing. A very efficient kitchen staff served up the plates quickly. Each plate had an ample portion of lasagna, Caesar salad and garlic bread. The servers then tempted our palates with decadent brownies, 3 small scoops of vanilla ice cream, topped with butterscotch sauce, tea and coffee. Yum! Following dessert, I read a poem (attached) entitled "The Old Home", written by my late sister, Mildred (Greene) Sidebottom. It was about her former home. Isaac Gilbert, and his mother Joele, serenaded us with several songs. They had nice harmony. Isaac has a soft touch on the guitar. Thanks to the many hands who helped in any way to make this event a success. You are all very much appreciated by our seniors. Note by Connie Campbell: Attached is the poem by my sister Mildred that you requested. Also a 2007 photo taken when Mildred turned 70. The doll she is holding was a gift from me on her 70th birthday. I commissioned Sandra English to make the doll. Sandra gave her the name of ‘Millie Taymite’ which Mildred loved. In Alberta she is known as Millie. Editor's Note: Several years ago, the TCA inherited, from the Taymouth United Church, the practice of honouring our Seniors with an annual meal. If you are a senior living in Taymouth, and would like to participate in the 2017 TCA Seniors' Luncheon, please contact us at [email protected] CONGRATULATIONS TO POST MISTRESS ELVA CLEGHORN ON HER JULY 8TH RETIREMENT By Pat Allen For each and every one of us who has mailed a Christmas package, signed for a Registered letter, or just purchased a book of stamps from the Durham Bridge post office, July 8th, 2016 will mark a big change. On this date, after thirty years of dedication to the mail service, our local Postmistress Elva Cleghorn is retiring. Congratulations Elva! Born to Faye and the late Basil Stewart of Taymouth, Elva was one of 11 siblings. Seven of Faye and Basil's children still reside in the Nashwaak Valley. Forty years ago Elva moved downriver to marry Rick Cleghorn of Durham Bridge. The young couple had two sons John and Andy. In October 1985, with the passing of the former Postmistress Pauline Cleghorn (Rick's mom), Elva stepped in "to temporarily look after" the mail. At that time the post-office was just inside the back door of Alan Cleghorn's home. Reeling from her mother-in-law's death, (and being a rather shy individual) Elva never intended to become a permanent Canada Post employee. However, when her husband was suddenly laid off and there were two young mouths to feed, a decision was made to apply for the permanent position. In 1986 Elva was officially hired as the new Durham Bridge Postmistress. In 1993 the Post Office was moved from the Cleghorn home to the little brown building on the edge of the Durham Community Center parking lot. In a recent conversation, Elva reflected that her work was most often an on-the-job learning experience. In 2009 a computer was installed. With it a whole new era of service (and a continuous technology learning curve) was introduced. There was also the keeping-up with the myriad of rules and regulations which Canada Post constantly produced and continuously revised to keep up with the times. For example, three decades ago Elva didn't have to worry about identity-theft, money laundering, fraud by mail etc. When asked for memorable moments, the ever professional and always stoic Elva thought for a few moments before saying that during her 30 years everything was "pretty much work as usual". The Post Office was broken into twice. In 2004 the out-going mail was stolen. In 2011 the alarm system scared off the intruders before anything was taken. Of her clients (us) Elva mused that most people are good natured, easy to serve, and understanding that the system is much larger than the little Durham Bridge cog in the big Canada Post wheel. And, Elva said, she always tried to smile even though sometimes she may not have felt like it! We want to thank you Elva. Thanks for all the years of being the familiar face of our community and for, as you said, "just doing my job". Thanks for listening to us complain about the cost of stamps; for explaining our mail woes; for looking up postal codes; for keeping an eye out our special packages (that we of course always felt should have arrived by now); and, for chatting with us about the weather, dogs, new babies, community suppers etc. No gossip mind you, just friendly conversations between the Postmistress and her neighbors. Elva, as individuals and as a community we are happy for you. Your retirement has been hard earned and you deserve this break. Have an absolutely great time finding Elva beyond the postal service. We will miss you. PS. July 8th will be Elva's last day in the little brown Post Office building. Your best wishes can be delivered to her personally anytime before closing on that date.
