Dane Swan`s Taymouth poetry workshop and sessions with the grades 3,4 and 5 classes at Nashwaak Valley School by Lisa Ng (Note: Lisa is a former student of the Taymouth Elementary School and a teacher. Lisa is organizing a small reunion this summer at the TCC with her classmates and former teachers) Having had the opportunity to attend Dane Swan’s workshop at the TCC was of great pleasure. To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect as I had always grown up finding poetry something that was difficult and confusing at the same time. Through it all, Dane somehow managed to tackle it with such poise and simplify the poem -creating process to make it seem effortless. All in all, the workshop was a resounding success and here is the direct fruit of my labour for the night: Untitled. Dear Teachers, You will never know. Truly How devotion molded us Transformed us Made us who we are Thank you For mask making Goop Mess All those staples Thank you For reading. Stories The quilt one. One minute mysteries. Hand of Robin Squires. Land of the blue dolphins. I am David You might not know this. Stories cement. Love of reading. I had no stories read. Limited books. Thank you. For teaching us we could be authors too. Choosing wallpaper covers. Dedicating our books. Making it our own. But most of all, thank you for instilling in us, people who work together, grow together. And that sponges fallen on pebbles Should not be used to wash cars. Sorry cars. After attending the poetry workshop with Dane, I was intrigued by Dane’s experiences and wondered how such an experience would ever come to translate into a school setting. I was fortunate enough to have Jean Burgess` help in arranging a visit to the Nashwaak Valley School as a shadow for Dane Swan. Thank you Jean! During the course of the morning, I was able to follow Dane around a grade 3,4, and 5 classroom to promote the use of poetry in the classroom. In the grade 3 class, Dane began the class by reciting a hopscotch poem he had written himself, still unpublished, and instantly had the children hooked. Then, he had the students come up with a topic they liked and as a class, they wrote the poem, line by line. Hockey is fun Hockey is teamwork It’s an active sport You’re skating around Around in the rink Shooting the puck Scoring goals As Dane’s session began, one of the children in the grade 4 class grumbled about being tired, and as a result, a poem on sleep was produced. Some alterations from the original. Sleep, sleep, nobody makes a peep Getting comfy in your comfortable bed Dream a dream of dancing ice cream Dream, dream of sugar plum ice cream Snoring, snoring, gets really annoying Drool, drool Makes a pool Everyone is peaceful Sleepwalking, dreamwalking Everybody get their teddy bears As we neared the grade 5 class, I wondered what approach Dane would take in this. He surprised me. He read his favorite poem about singing from his book, a Mingus lullaby, and near the end, the children were so in awe of his poem that they all gave him a resounding applause. From here, rather than have the children write a poem, he took the poem and had the students break down some of the themes that were illustrated in this through mind-mapping. What I learned through the journey into these three classes was how Dane, though an accomplished author and poet, was so grounded. With his quiet demeanor, you could still see how his love of poetry shone through and how he loved just “be-ing” in the moment. Thank you to Natasha Spencer and the staff at NVS for providing me the opportunity to come into your classroom and your school. If it wasn’t for all of you, this experience would not have been possible. That's it for this week folks! Have a great week everyone!
